Before you head out

How can you find out how long the wait is at a restaurant right now?

If the restaurant has an online waitlist, join it: that is the real queue. If it doesn't, call and ask the host how long the wait is for your party size, and whether they'll put your name down before you arrive. Google's busy chart and typical-wait estimates are based on past visits, so they can't tell you the wait for your party tonight.

If you'd rather not make the call, Callio can phone the restaurant, ask the wait for your party, ask them to add your name if you want, and send back the answer with the full transcript. See how it compares

Every way to check, and where each one breaks

  1. Google Maps busy times and typical waits

    Works when
Good for picking a quieter hour ahead of time. Some restaurants also show how long people typically wait.
    Falls short
Both come from past visits, not tonight's door. A full dining room with fast turnover can have no wait at all.
  2. An online waitlist

    Works when
Where the restaurant offers one (through Yelp or its own site), it's the actual line with a live estimate.
    Falls short
Most restaurants don't offer one, and those that do may turn it off when they're slammed.
  3. Reservation apps

    Works when
The way to avoid most of the wait when a table is open.
    Falls short
Popular times are often booked by the time you look, and they don't show the walk-in wait.
  4. Call the host stand

    Works when
The host knows the wait for your party size right now, and many will add your name to the list by phone.
    Falls short
At the peak of dinner, the phone at a busy restaurant often rings out.
  5. Have Callio make the call

    Works when
Callio calls the restaurant, asks the wait for your party, and can ask them to add your name if you want it to. It says it's an AI when it asks them to hold a spot. You get the answer and the full transcript.
    Falls short
Calls to businesses require Callio Premium. It can't make a busy host pick up. Calls are in English, to US restaurants on Google Maps.

Why the wait isn't posted anywhere

A wait depends on your party size, which tables are about to turn, and how many people are standing at the door. The host works it out on the spot, and it can change by the quarter hour. That's why a busy chart can't tell you, and why the host stand is where the current number lives.

Ask sooner than you'd think

Call before you leave, not when you're parked. If they take names by phone, a call twenty minutes out can be most of the wait spent at home. Some restaurants call this call-ahead seating; others will only add you once you're there. Ask.

What to ask the host

Whether you call or Callio does, these get a number you can plan around.

  • Give your party size first. The wait for two and the wait for six are different lines.
  • Ask how long the wait is right now, and if it's usually longer or shorter in the next half hour.
  • Ask whether they'll put your name down by phone, and how long they'll hold it once you're called. If Callio is calling, ask it in your request to put your name down.
  • Ask if the bar or patio is first come, first served, and quicker.
  • If you need anything specific, like a high chair, a booth, or step-free seating, ask now.

What a wait time is, and isn't

It's the host's estimate for your party at the moment of the call, and it can change by the time you arrive. It doesn't hold you a spot unless they agree to add your name to the waitlist, and a waitlist spot isn't a reservation. If the restaurant doesn't pick up, Callio tells you it wasn't answered instead of guessing.

Questions

Restaurant waits, answered

Does Google show restaurant wait times?

For some restaurants, Google shows how busy it usually is, how busy it is now compared with usual, and how long people typically wait, all based on past visits. None of that is the wait for your party right now. The host knows that.

Can I get on a restaurant's waitlist by phone?

Many restaurants will add your name by phone, often called call-ahead seating. Others only take names in person. It varies by place and by how busy they are, so ask when you call.

Can Callio put my name on the waitlist?

It can ask. If you ask it to put your name down, Callio asks the host to add you, says it's an AI assistant calling for you, and gives the name from your profile if they ask. The result says whether they agreed.

What if the restaurant doesn't answer?

Busy restaurants often let the phone ring at peak times. Callio tells you the call wasn't answered, and you can try again, or pick a nearby place and ask there.

Is Callio free?

You can try a free practice call to your own phone. Calls to businesses need Callio Premium, a subscription billed through the App Store or Google Play, with unlimited calls to businesses.
