Before you go

Google says they're open. How can you make sure they're actually open today?

Check whether the listing says the business itself updated its hours recently, then look at its most recent social post for a same-day closure. If the trip matters, call during the hours they claim and ask staff to confirm the day and time you plan to arrive. A recording that announces a closure for that day answers it too. Ask about the service you need, not just the door, because kitchens, pharmacies, and service desks often close earlier than the building.

If you'd rather not make the call, Callio can phone the business, ask about the day and the service you need, and send back what the staff said with the full transcript. See how it compares

Every way to check, and where each one breaks

  1. Google Maps hours

    Works when
Fine on an ordinary weekday, especially when the listing shows the business updated its hours or posted holiday hours.
    Falls short
Anyone can suggest an edit, many owners never update holiday hours, and nothing there knows about a closure decided this morning.
  2. The business's website

    Works when
Good for the regular schedule and planned holiday closures.
    Falls short
Small business sites are often updated once a year, if that. Same-day changes almost never land there.
  3. Their latest Instagram or Facebook post

    Works when
Where many small businesses announce a sudden closure, a private event, or weather hours.
    Falls short
Only if they post, and a missing post doesn't tell you they're open.
  4. Call the business

    Works when
Staff who confirm the day and time you're coming are the best evidence there is, and they can tell you about the kitchen, the pharmacy, or the last appointment.
    Falls short
You have to call during business hours, and a quiet line might mean closed or might just mean busy.
  5. Have Callio make the call

    Works when
Callio calls the business you picked on Google Maps, asks your question, follows up when the answer is vague, and sends back a summary and the full transcript. You don't pick up the phone.
    Falls short
Calls to businesses require Callio Premium. An unanswered call tells you less than a person does, and Callio reports it as unanswered instead of guessing. Calls are in English, to US businesses.

Why posted hours go wrong

Posted hours are the plan, not the day. Holidays, staff calling out, a private event, the weather, or an owner closing early on a slow night all change the day without changing the listing. And the hours on the door are not always the hours of the thing you came for: a restaurant kitchen closes before the dining room, a pharmacy counter closes before the store, and the last appointment at a salon or garage is well before closing time.

When it's worth confirming

Holidays and the days around them, a long drive, arriving within an hour of closing, bad weather, a small or family-run business, and anything where you need a specific counter or service rather than just an open door.

What to ask when you call

Whether you call or Callio does, one precise question beats "are you open?"

  • Name the day and the time: "Are you open until 9 tonight?" beats "Are you open today?"
  • Ask about the service you need: the kitchen, the pharmacy, the service desk, the bakery counter.
  • Ask for the last order, last seating, last appointment, or last drop-off time.
  • Ask whether anything is different today: a private event, a short staff, a department closed.
  • If a holiday is coming up, ask about that day too while you have them.

Real call

A real holiday-hours check

A Callio user checked a pharmacy's Labor Day hours the week before. This is the call as the app showed it.

  4. Callio

  5. Business

    We will not.

  6. Callio

Got it, you'll be closed on Labor Day. Thank you!

What came back

The agent spoke with a staff member named [staff] at Service Drug Store, who confirmed that the pharmacy will be closed on Labor Day.

  • Spoke with staff member [staff]
  • Confirmed business closure on Labor Day
  • No further information needed

Six days before the holiday. The menu already said it, and a person confirmed it.

What a call can and can't tell you

A person on the line can confirm the day and time you're coming, which is worth more than just reaching someone. A recording that announces a closure for that day is an answer too, and Callio reports it that way; a generic recording is not. A call nobody picks up is not proof of anything, so Callio reports it as unanswered and doesn't redial on its own.

Questions

Confirming hours, answered

How accurate are Google business hours?

Usually right on an ordinary day, least reliable on holidays and for same-day changes. Anyone can suggest an edit to a listing, and many small businesses never update holiday hours. If the listing says the business updated its hours recently, trust it more.

What's the most reliable way to check if a business is open today?

Call during the hours they list and ask staff to confirm the day and time you're coming. That, or a recording announcing a closure for that day, is better evidence than any listing.

Can Callio check holiday hours ahead of time?

Yes. Ask Callio to call while they're open and ask about the holiday, and you get their answer and the transcript before the day arrives.

What does Callio do if the business doesn't answer?

It ends the call and tells you nobody answered, or that a recording said they were closed. An unanswered call is never shown as an answer.

Is Callio free?

You can try a free practice call to your own phone. Calls to businesses need Callio Premium, a subscription billed through the App Store or Google Play, with unlimited calls to businesses.
