Which AI assistants can actually call a business for you?
Most of them can't, and the ones that can do quite different things. Two dial, one of those still leaves you doing the talking, and only some hand you a record of what was said.
The short version
ChatGPT and Claude don't place phone calls. The Gemini app can dial from your Android phone, but it's a voice-controlled dialer: your line, your voice, your conversation. Google Search can genuinely call a local business and ask on your behalf, which is the closest thing here to what Callio does, though it only covers a few service categories and not every state. The differences that matter are whether the assistant talks instead of you, whether it can commit to anything, and whether you get to read what was actually said.

Dialing and talking are different features
It's easy to read "Gemini can make calls" as "Gemini will handle the call". It won't. It opens the Phone app and dials, which saves you finding the number and is genuinely handy while driving. The moment someone answers, you are on the phone having the conversation. If the part you wanted to skip was talking to a stranger, a voice-controlled dialer doesn't skip it.
Asking a question is different from making a booking
Google Search's calling feature gathers information: prices, availability, whether a service is offered. For a simple price check, where it's offered, it's free and it works. Two limits are worth knowing. It doesn't commit anything on your behalf, so booking a table, moving an appointment, or cancelling something still lands back on you. And it's still an expanding experiment: a few service categories, five states left out, and any business can switch these calls off in its Google profile. It may simply not be there for the business you had in mind.
Whether you get to read it back
A summary tells you the answer. A transcript tells you what they actually said, including the condition attached to it that a summary drops. When the call decides whether you drive somewhere, take time off work, or pay a deposit, the difference matters. Callio returns both, every time.

Can Claude make phone calls?
Not on its own. Claude has no telephony of its own, so a call would come from a separate service connected to it, and that service is the thing actually talking to the business.
Is Gemini calling the same as an assistant handling the call?
No. Gemini dials from your phone and hands you the conversation. It's a faster way to start a call you were going to make anyway, not a way to avoid making it.
If Google Search can call a business for free, why use anything else?
Where it works, that's a fair point and you should use it. But it covers a few service categories in some states, and it asks rather than does. Callio is for the calls outside that: booking, rescheduling, cancelling, anything you need in writing afterwards, and every business its rollout doesn't reach.
Do these calls tell the business it's an AI?
