Visiting the USA

Need to call a US hotel or restaurant?

Travel eSIM with data only? Hotel not answering email? A question that has to be confirmed by phone? Many US hotels and restaurants answer the phone faster than email, and few use WhatsApp. Here is every way to reach them from abroad without an international call, including having Callio make the call for you.

Type what you need. Callio makes the call in English from its own number and brings back a written summary and the full transcript. You don't need a US phone number. See how it compares

Six ways to reach a US business while you travel, and where each one falls short

  1. Email or the business's website

    Works when
Useful for questions that can wait and for answers you want in writing. Use the address on the business's official site or your confirmation.
    Falls short
Replies can take days, and some hotels don't answer at all before you arrive. Restaurants rarely answer email for same-week questions.
  2. Your booking platform's messages

    Works when
If you booked a hotel through a booking site, its message center can reach the property and keeps a written record.
    Falls short
Only works for the hotel you booked there, and the reply still depends on the property. It doesn't help with restaurants, shops, or anything you haven't booked.
  3. WhatsApp or another messaging app

    Works when
Works if the business lists a WhatsApp number, which some hotels catering to international guests do.
    Falls short
Most US businesses, especially restaurants and independent shops, don't use WhatsApp. A regular US landline can't receive app calls or messages.
  4. Calling credit, roaming, or a SIM with voice

    Works when
A roaming plan, a US SIM or eSIM that includes voice minutes, or a calling app with paid credit lets you dial a US number yourself.
    Falls short
Many travel eSIMs are data only. International calling can be expensive, and you still have to make the call, navigate the phone menu, and catch details in English.
  5. Your hotel's front desk or concierge

    Works when
Once you've checked in at a US hotel, the front desk or concierge will often call a restaurant or attraction for you.
    Falls short
Only helps after you arrive, depends on how busy staff are, and can't help with the hotel you're trying to reach before your trip.
  6. Have Callio make the call

    Works when
Pick the business on Google Maps, type what you need in the app, and Callio calls it in English from its own number. It asks each of your questions in turn and sends back a summary and the full transcript. It works over Wi-Fi or a data-only eSIM.
    Falls short
Calls to businesses require Callio Premium. Calls are in English, to US businesses only. Callio can work through short phone menus, but some numbers don't reach a person. Callio doesn't wait for a callback, so it suits questions staff can answer on the call.

Why a data-only eSIM leaves you stuck

Most travel eSIMs give you mobile data but no phone number, so you can't dial a regular US number or receive a callback. That's fine until a hotel ignores your email about parking, or a restaurant only takes large-party bookings by phone.

Messaging apps don't close the gap the way they do in many other countries. Plenty of US hotels and most restaurants are reached by an ordinary phone call, and the answer you need is often one short call away.

What travelers ask US businesses

Hotels: parking price, the incidental deposit, early check-in or late checkout, luggage storage before check-in, airport shuttles, and resort or amenity fees.

Restaurants: whether they take reservations, the wait for your party size, dietary options, and whether they can seat a large group.

Shops and services: whether an item is in stock, opening hours on a holiday, and the price of a service before you go.

What to have ready before the call

Whether you call or Callio does, the answer is only as good as the details you give.

  • The exact business: pick it on Google Maps so the call reaches the right location, not a chain's central line.
  • The business's local opening hours. Calls outside them usually reach a recording, and US time zones are often many hours behind or ahead of you.
  • Your dates, times, and party size, and the name your reservation is under, if you have one.
  • Each question written out, including what would change your plans, for example "if parking is over $40 a night, ask about nearby garages."
  • What you want back: an amount, a yes or no, or a time. Ask for the staff member's name for anything important.
  • For a booking, the details the business will need, such as a name, party size, and a number they can reach you on. Callio can't pay or give card details, so a booking that needs a card has to be finished by you.
“Hi, I'm calling for a guest arriving on May 12. What's the overnight parking price, and is there an incidental deposit at check-in?”

What Callio can and can't do for travelers

It calls US businesses in English and reports what staff told it, with the full transcript. It can't call businesses outside the US, wait for a callback, pay for anything, or handle emergencies. For an emergency in the US, dial 911 from any phone.

Questions

Calling US businesses while traveling, answered

How do I call a US hotel from abroad without an international call?

Message through your booking platform, use WhatsApp if the hotel lists a number, or have Callio make the call. Callio calls from its own US line, so you pay no international calling charges and get a written summary and transcript in the app.

Can I call a US restaurant with a data-only eSIM?

Not directly, because a data-only eSIM has no phone number. Callio works over mobile data or Wi-Fi: you type the question, it calls the restaurant in English, and you read the answer in the app.

Do US hotels and restaurants use WhatsApp?

Some hotels that serve international guests do, and they list the number on their website. Most US restaurants and independent businesses don't, so a phone call is usually the fastest way to get an answer.

Do I need a US phone number to use Callio?

No. Callio calls from its own line, and you get the result in the app over Wi-Fi or mobile data. For a booking, Callio gives the business the contact number you enter, which can be your home number, only if they ask for one.

Can I use Callio from outside the US?

Yes, as long as the business you're calling is in the US. Callio is on the App Store and Google Play in most countries, including the UK, the EU, Canada, and Australia. It isn't available in a few places, such as China mainland and Russia. See the full list of countries and regions

What if the business wants to call me back?

Callio turns down callback offers and tries to get your answer on the call. If staff can only answer later, Callio tells you to call back, so you can decide what to do next, for example ask a different question or try again later.

Does Callio speak languages other than English?

Callio calls US businesses in English. You can use the app in English, Spanish, or Chinese, and the summary comes back in your app language.

Is Callio free?

Calls to businesses need Callio Premium, a subscription billed through the App Store or Google Play, in your local currency in most countries and in US dollars in some. The free practice call rings your own phone and needs a US mobile number.
