How can you compare quotes from several local businesses?

Start with three businesses if time and availability allow. Give each the same job description, specifications, location, and preferred timing. Ask whether the price is fixed, an estimate, or a starting price, and check what's included and excluded. For clearly defined work, phone pricing can help you make an initial comparison. For larger or uncertain jobs, use the calls to check suitability, availability, and assessment fees, then compare written estimates based on the same scope.

If you'd rather not make the calls, you can use Callio to contact each business separately with the same job description and questions. Each call returns a summary and transcript, so you can review the prices, conditions, and unanswered questions side by side. See how it compares

Four ways to request quotes, and where each one falls short

  1. Lead-matching sites

    Works when
One request can connect you with several participating businesses, which can help when you don't already have a shortlist.
    Falls short
Depending on the platform, your contact details may be shared with several businesses, leading to multiple follow-ups. Matches are limited to participating providers, so compare their suitability, terms, and quotes yourself.
  2. Quote forms, one by one

    Works when
Useful for sending the same written brief, photos, and specifications to each business and requesting an itemized reply.
    Falls short
Response times and formats vary, and some businesses may call for more information. Check each response for missing details or different assumptions before comparing totals.
  3. Call each business yourself

    Works when
Useful for clarifying details immediately when you reach the right person. You can explain the same scope and ask follow-up questions about each answer.
    Falls short
You need to reach each business during its opening hours and repeat the details. Some questions may require a callback, photos, or a written estimate.
  4. Have Callio call each business

    Works when
Start a separate request for each business, reusing the same job description and core questions. Callio handles the conversation and returns a summary and transcript for each call. Review what each price includes and follow up on any missing details before comparing.
    Falls short
Calls to businesses require Callio Premium. Some businesses need photos, measurements, or an assessment before quoting, and further contact may be needed. Calls are in English, to US businesses.

Tip: If you're only gathering quotes, say so in your request: "Ask for pricing and availability only; don't accept a quote or book the work."

Which jobs can be quoted over the phone

Phone pricing is most useful when the business has enough information to define the work, for example a specified tire service for a known vehicle, or a stated quantity of material delivered to a known address. Ask whether the amount is fixed or depends on further checks.

For work involving uncertain conditions or custom design, ask whether photos or measurements are enough, or whether an assessment is needed. An initial call can help compare availability, assessment fees, and any clearly stated budget ranges. Compare detailed written estimates once the scope is clear.

Ask every business the same questions

Whether you call or Callio does, use the same job brief and comparison checklist. Make sure each business is pricing the same work, and record any differences or assumptions.

  • Describe the same scope: the work, quantity, dimensions, material or model specifications, location, and preferred timing. Share the same photos or measurements where relevant.
  • Identify the price type: fixed price, estimate, starting price, hourly rate, or per-unit rate.
  • Ask for the total for that scope, including applicable parts, labor, materials, delivery, disposal, tax, and other fees. Record anything excluded.
  • Ask what could change the price. If pricing is hourly or per unit, confirm the expected quantity and any minimum charge.
  • Confirm availability, the expected duration, and how long the quote is valid.
  • If an assessment is needed, ask when it can happen, what it costs, and whether that fee is credited toward the work.
  • Compare relevant experience, warranty terms, and credentials as well as price. Verify applicable licensing and insurance before hiring.
  • Request an itemized written estimate before committing to substantial work. Mark missing information as "not confirmed" and follow up before choosing.

Example: comparing the same material order and delivery address

Illustrative figures only; all amounts below are before tax.

Follow up with C before ranking the offers, and check that all three are pricing the same material specification and quantity.

Real call

Three shops, one afternoon

A Callio user asked three tattoo shops the same question. These are the calls as the app showed them.

Call three shops, one afternoon · Devine Line Tattoos, The Painted Fox, All American Tattoo

August 2026 · 3 calls · Call length 2:25 total

Three separate calls with the same ask, shown together. Callio's opening line is from the first call; each shop's answer is from its own.

The ask

Ask each shop if they have availability today for a small cursive [initial] tattoo with a butterfly wing, under two inches, on the hand, and ask for an estimated price.

On the call

  1. Callio

I'm calling to check if you have availability today for a small cursive [initial] tattoo with a butterfly wing on the hand, and to ask for an estimated price. I'm an AI assistant calling on behalf of your customer.

  2. Devine Line Tattoos

We probably wouldn't have time today, but if you go to our website and fill out our contact form, I can talk to one of my artists and get you a price and see when we would have time to do it.

  3. The Painted Fox

We do not have any walk-ins today, but we do have walk-ins on Wednesdays. One fifty.

  4. All American Tattoo

Yes, we do. I do not price anything over the phone. You have to come in, because I don't know exactly what you're getting.

  5. Callio

No problem, thank you for letting me know! I'll pass that along.

What came back

Three shops, three different answers: one is fully booked today and wants the request through their contact form; one takes walk-ins on Wednesdays and estimated $150; one has room today but only quotes in person.

  • Devine Line: no same-day availability, submit the online contact form
  • The Painted Fox: walk-ins on Wednesdays, estimated $150
  • All American Tattoo: availability today, pricing in person only

The same question to three businesses, answered while the user did something else. This is what a phone call is for.

What phone quotes can and can't do

They compare standard jobs well and screen big ones fast. They can't replace an on-site estimate for work that depends on what someone finds. Callio asks the same question of every business you pick and reports each answer as given, including "we only quote in person."

Questions

Comparing quotes, answered

How many quotes should I get?

Three is a common starting point, more for a large job. What matters most is that every business priced the same scope, so the numbers compare.

Should I pay for an estimate?

For many trades, estimates are free; for some diagnostic work, a fee is normal and is sometimes credited if you go ahead. Ask up front, on every call.

Can Callio call several businesses for the same job?

Yes. Start a separate request for each business with the same job description, and you get a separate summary and transcript from each.

Does Callio accept a quote or book the work?

Not unless your request asks it to. On a quote call it asks only, and the transcript shows exactly what was asked.

Is Callio free?

You can try a free practice call to your own phone. Calls to businesses need Callio Premium, a subscription billed through the App Store or Google Play, with unlimited calls to businesses.
